Neonatal mortality remains unacceptably high in Tanzania. Additionally, low birth weight babies are particularly susceptible to infections and need extra care to keep warm and dry. Consequently, health facilities in Temeke District are teaching mothers the 'Kangaroo Mother Care' technique which helps to keep a low birth weight baby warm and enables breastfeeding which provides protection from infection. Simple cost-effective solutions such as Kangaroo Mother Care can make a big difference in those vital first days of a small baby's life.
