While crimes against women are being reported in all corners of the country, one panchayat in Kerala’s Alappuzha district has made it its mission to ensure that the state records minimum atrocities against women. The Panchayat’s efforts first began in 2011 with small groups of women meeting and discussing their problems. “A 65-year-old lady said that her husband and sons consumed liquor at home along with their friends. Once one of their friends tried to rape her after getting drunk,” Panchayat Member and former Panchayat president NP Snehajan said. When several other women opened up on such issues, the panchayat decided to conduct a survey. The survey suggested that a majority of women had faced some kind of abuse, verbal or physical. The panchayat has set up 23 women friendly committees in Mararikulum South village where women can approach these committees and report their complaints. The complaints can be of any nature ranging from domestic violence to verbal abuse to harassment.
