90% kids vaccinated against Japanese Encephalitis in East Champaran

On the second day of two-day special Japanese Encephalitis (JS) vaccination drive in East Champaran district over 90 % children were vaccinated against the disease at all Anganwadi centres and primary health centres (PHCs). Dr Sushil Kumar Sinha, district immunization officer, said that almost every children in the vulnerable age group were given this vaccine to prevent JE in the district. On Sunday, the first day of the vaccination drive, Union health minister Dr Harsh Vardhan was expected to visit Mehasi in East Champaran, an area affected by Acute Encephalitis syndrome (AES), to supervise the vaccination drive and know the PHCs condition but he returned from Kanti to Patna. The state health department had informed the civil surgeon office of Motihari to remain alert in view of the expected visit of Dr Vardhan to Mehasi bordering Kanti in Muzaffarpur district. According to Mothari sadar hospital sources, in the last four days 20 patients of AES had been admitted to hospitals in East Champaran district. Out of 20 patients, seven were admitted to private Duncan hospital at Raxaul where they are getting treatment.
